The McLaren driver edged out fellow driver and championship contender Oscar Piastri for the fastest time in the final moments of practice at the Brazilian Grand Prix. The British racer, who grabbed the title advantage from his teammate by a single point after taking the win in Mexico City recently, beat the Australian by a tiny margin of 0.023secs. Until that point, Piastri had been the quickest of the McLaren pair for most of the session before the sprint shootout set to begin at 6:30 PM GMT. The Red Bull star, the other racer in realistic title contention, sitting 36 points behind Norris, finished in P17 as his Red Bull team followed a unique setup. Verstappen's team-mate the Japanese driver was the only driver to have an incident, if briefly, when he rotated at corner four during the early running. The Japanese slid over the curbs on exit before rotating through the gravel trap, and was lucky to get away with just a slight brush of the fence. The Ferrari of Lewis Hamilton also had a spin, at the conclusion of the practice, turning around through the high-speed Mergulho turn approaching the final bend on to the start-finish straight. The seven-time champion ended the session in P19, one place behind team-mate the Monegasque driver. Norris and Piastri were far ahead of the remaining drivers, with Nico Hulkenberg's car P3, 0.619 seconds behind Piastri's pace. The Aston Martin of Fernando Alonso was fourth fastest, with the Sauber of Gabriel Bortoleto ahead of the Mercedes of Russell and the Alpine of Gasly and Williams' Carlos Sainz.
